JSC Solutions Ltd is a small privately owned IT company based in Camberley, Surrey. The company was established in 2003 with the goal of offering small busineses a no-nonsense and "jargon-lite" approach to meeting their IT needs. Behind this was the belief that there are lots of people who use IT but don't want to get bogged down in technical stuff that is quite frankly irrelevant to their business.

Data Centre

Our UK servers are based in Technical Building, Maidenhead, a dedicated managed data centre.

NETWORK

Network infrastructure is fully switched, redundant routers with multiple connections to different ISP's. Each server has a 100Mbit connection on a fully switched port to an edge switch which is then connected to two separate aggregation switches at 1Gbit, giving failover redundancy on either 1Gbit link.

The aggregation switches have multiple 2Gbit uplinks to core switches which are interlinked at 4Gbit. Network transit is to level 3, AboveNet and NewNet and approx 200 peering sessions to other ISP's at LINX, XChangePoint and LoNAP. Total connectivity is 8000Mbits.

SECURITY

The datacentre has 24/7 security consisting of on-site personel, security barrier, 24x7x356 monitoring, CCTV cameras and security breach alarms. Visual verification is carried out of all visitors to the facility.

ACCESS

Access to the building, data floors and individual areas are via individually programmed Proximity Access Cards (PAC). Issue and usage of PAC's is logged centrally by time and date. Usage of any PAC is limited to one individual. Whenever a PAC is swiped over a security sensor, the digital photograph is displayed on security system constantly monitored by security personel. This information is verified visually vefore access is granted.

POWER

A minimum of 1kW per square meter is provided for throughout the data floors. Power provision is maintained at an N+1 standard, meaning that if two generators are required to provide 100% load, then 3 will be installed. Backup generators and UPS systems guarantee power 100% of the time, even in the event of a main grid power failure.

Backups power systems consist of 6 2000kVA Generators and 8000KVA of UPS systems.

FIRE DETECTION & SUPPRESSION

Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA) is installed in the facility. These highly sensitive smoke detectors are linked to teh Building Management System, which is monitored continuously by the Network Operations Centre. This provides very early detection to avoid firs, loss and disruption to business. This is coupled with an environmentally friendly �gas fire retardant to put our fires instantly without damaging equipment.

AIR CONDITIONING

To ensure optimum performance, all data floors are maintained at a constant 21�C � 2�C and relative humidity is kept at 50% � 10%. Both are continually monitored via the BMS.

Mini Centre Berkshire

Mini Centre Berkshire is a small family run automotive business that specialises in Minis. Basically "Anything Mini" goes - meaning they will repair and service, buy and sell, renovate and even bring a car up to racing specification.

Work was currently expanding, and the business expected to move from the family home, to a small garage unit.

Mini Centre Berkshire approached JSC Solutions Ltd to develop and host a new website that would promote their services online, with the view to further expanding their customer base.

The creative requirements were for the web site to be simple, bright and arresting. JSC Solutions retained the services of a trusted solutions partner well-versed in new media skills to ensure the web site had a professional, "pixel-tight", visual presentation.

The initial invitation to quote for the work arrived in mid October 2003. The requirements capture, proposal, design and development and finally publishing of the finished work was complete well before Christmas.

Ark Designs Fleecewear

This niche, family-run, business was already trading successfully on eBay but wanted to make their proposition a little more personal with their own web site.

What the owners wanted was an online store where they could could showcase their catalogue of original handcrafted fleecewear and sell items online. They also wanted to be able to manage their own stock and make their own updates to the web site.

For this web build, the WordPress CMS was chosen as the underlying framework. It was stylised and given ecommerce features by use of a specialised theme. With administrative access to the backend of the web site, the proprietors can write their own news items, update and add pages, update pictures and details for their products and of course add new ones. The ecommerce is integrated with PayPal to accept payments securely online.

Some of the things you always wanted to know about website hosting but were too afraid to ask about...

Here are some notes to help you understand some of the terms involved with web hosting and websites in general.

Domain Names and Registration

Not all websites are for business purposes but we can start off using the analogy of a website as a shop, or shopfront, to explain some of the terms and concepts involved. The first item on our list is the domain name. If the website is your shop, then the domain name is like the sign above your door. In fact it goes beyond that, because your domain name provides a unique identification of your website on the internet. So it's like your sign and full address combined. Like a trademark, it costs money to set up a domain name. This is called registering the domain name. Then you have your "identity" on the internet.

A domain name's registration must be renewed, typically yearly or every two years. The company that does this is called a registrar and is said to "manage" the domain name. The yearly cost to have a domain name registered is usually of the order of a few pounds.

Hosting Services

Web space is like the actual "space" that you rent for your shop in the shopping centre. In hosting terms it equates to the physical disk space that is allocated for storing your website's files. There is a monthly or yearly charge for this. Shops in a real shopping centre can be charged thousands of pounds per month for a decent space in the shopping centre but you can get basic web space for around �50 per year, or even less sometimes.

Your website is stored on a web server, which is a server computer that is connected to the internet and configured for delivering output for the web.

DNS

A domain name is associated with a website using the Domain Name System (DNS). The entry for this in Wikipedia reads as in the section below. You can skip it if you like!

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a distributed hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices worldwide. An often-used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses.

To the uninitiated that might seem obscure and technical, to say the least, but do not worry! The essential thing to appreciate is that every device connected to the internet has a unique, special number called an IP address. "IP" stands for Internet Protocol. Just as your house number and postcode identify the location of your home, an IP address locates your website, or at least the server (or cluster of servers) where your website can be found. However, humans prefer words to numbers, and the Domain Name System is the system that turns a domain name into the appropriate number, namely its IP address.

Here's an example. If you enter the address "http://173.194.36.104/" into the address field on your web browser, you will find that it displays the Google main page. You get the same result if you enter "http://www.google.co.uk". This is because the DNS translates the name "google.co.uk" into the number "173.194.36.104", which is the public IP address for the Google website in the UK.

Additional Features

There are additional features, of varying importance and depending on your needs, that you can have added to your domaiin name. The most obvious will be one or more email addresses. Behind an email address is an email account which includes a mail box, which is some storage on a mail server. There are a number of different types of email account; a popular type is a "POP mail box". ("POP" stands for "Post Office Protocol".)

We all know what an email address looks like. The crucial thing is that it includes your domain name, so that if your domain name is veryfinefencing.co.uk, then your email address will be of the form, "sales@veryfinefencing.co.uk" or "john.smith@veryfinefencing.co.uk". It is common practice in business to use the full stop to separate first name and last name. But if someone has managed to get their own family name registered before anyone else, sfor example barker-smith.com, they can take advantage of the domain name and set up email addresses like henry@barker-smith.com and felicity@barker-smith.com.

When the web was in its infancy and websites were first appearing in the mid-1990s, websites were very commonly made up of static (that is, unchanging) web pages. You can think of such a website as being a bit like a brochure. Such a website was made up pages of text formatted in HTML, which stands for "HyperText Markup Language". The website would be updated infrequently. Doing so was not a straightforward process and required a little bit of technical know-how, such as understanding of HTML (just mentioned) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which is how you save your files back to the web server.

Nowadays websites are much more dynamic and interactive and they require technical knowledge to build them. This is done using clever code behind the scenes plus a database, which work together to bring you a richer and more dynamic user experience. The emergence of websites that can interact with the visitor like this gave rise to the term "Web 2.0" - the trend of the next-generation of website technology. Such websites can provide features such as ecommerce (for example, Amazon and eBay), forums and blogs (think of Facebook and Twitter) and video (such as YouTube).

The wide availability of these technologies means that you do not have to be one of the "big players" to have a website that can do these things.

Website Development

This is the designing and writing of the contents of your website - designing the shop floor and installing the cash registers, to push our metaphor or analogy a bit further. Website development has come a long way in the last 10 years and, as mentioned above, the expertise required to build, publish and maintain a website has been reduced dramatically by the advent of "power tools" and online services that empower all but the most timid user to do it themselves.

For example, with the appropriate hosting package and using a free content publishing platform such as WordPress, a relatively non-technical person can have a basic blogging website configured and deployed online, ready to start filling it with content, in a matter of minutes.

Internet Experts - Who needs 'em?!

So, if it's so easy to publish and maintain a website, what's the need for a professional website designer? In fact, there is still a place for designers and developers and other internet experts. Why is this? As technologies have advanced, websites have become able to do more complex things, and so have our expectations of what websites should do for us. There always seems to be something required that is ahead of the curve and outside of the "easy to do" box, and with that comes a need for the various types of expert. Indeed, new types of experts inevitably become invented and needed as we progress and create new technologies.

For example, the term "Search Engine Optimisation" (SEO) - the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in the search engines - is becoming a common term in the mainstream culture. People now talk about internet marketing and "driving traffic" to websites, and there are experts who make a living from it.

Webmasters started optimizing websites for search engines in the mid-1990s: They would submit their website address to the search engine directories and place "key words" relevant to the website content in specially allocated parts of the web pages. These days the requirements and techniques involved have evolved to the point now where SEO is like a "black art" - and experts can command several hundred pounds per month optimising a website to achieve high rankings with the search engines.

Apparently you have arrived at this page as a result of clicking a link on the simplychildcare.com website. This information here may be of interest to you.

The Simply Childcare business is run by Private Staffing Ltd, which is owned by Hasi Peto Dias.

Last time we checked, the link on the simplychildcare.com website claimed that it is hosted by JSC Solutions Ltd. This is not the case. In August 2014 Hasi Peto Dias abruptly requested that we terminate the hosting service, which I did straightaway.

I had enjoyed a "gentleman's agreement" with the previous owner of the business and we did not have any contracts drawn up, so there was nothing I could quibble about there. Hasi gave me an undertaking in writing that he would honour hosting charges up to the point when he stopped using the service, so I drew up and sent an invoice to this effect on 16-Aug-2014.

Hasi paid that final invoice after several months during which I sent many polite reminders and finally one warning that I would resort to the legal route to getting what I was owed.

Some background

The Simply Childcare business was founded by Carla Shimeld more than ten years ago. Her company website was hosted by JSC Solutions Ltd since 2003 and we had a civilised business relationship. Carla decided to sell the business around 2013, and in early 2014 she completed a sale to Hasi Peto Dias, who runs Private Staffing Limited among other companies.

During the transfer of ownership I was asked to make some changes to the email hosting. I duly did this and it resulted in a part of the website's functionality breaking. I got a complaint about this immediately.

Clearly they had not done much technical due diligence and did not know this would happen. I did not develop the website, so it was not my business to know the ins-and-outs of its design, and I was never engaged to offer technical oversight. Nevertheless, out of professional courtesy I investigated the problem and I managed to fix it for them. I think I received a thank-you for my free consultancy.

I had recommended that they engage the original developer to help them with any issues or further developments for the website. I had no particular financial interest in this, other than to ensure the smooth running of the website; it just made sense from a technical and business perspective. In my view the developer in question was very competent and would obviously be the best qualified person to work on the existing codebase. Initially Hasi thanked me for this suggestion and asked to be put in touch with the developer. However, he never did contact him and subsequently expressed some irritation that I had apparently "requested" that he use this guy.

The above was one of a few bizarre misunderstandings, which led me to conclude that Hasi Peto Dias is not an easy person to do business with. I feared that he had been less than assiduous in his acquisition of a technology-supported business and when things went wrong as a result of this, I was blamed. I would suggest this is a poor footing on which to build a business relationship. So while I am sad to have lost an interesting website business as a hosting client, I am nevertheless consoled that I no longer have to deal with this fellow.

Lack of development and out-of-date information

Amazingly, as at 01-Jan-2015, the simplychildcare.com website still features out-of-date (that is, incorrect) information on its About Us page. It still shows the details of the previous owners. This information is more than six months out of date. Of some quite noteworthy insensitivity is the fact that there is still a picture and a bio of Carla Shimeld. This lady is the owner I worked with for many years. Very sadly, she suddenly died soon after the sale of her business. The Private Staffing people know this; thus it seems woefully inconsiderate to her family that they have not updated this page appropriately.
